Former top-ranked tennis player Marat Safin has won a seat in Russia's lower house of Parliament.
The 31-year-old Safin, who retired from tennis in 2009, will be one of the youngest members in the 450-seat legislature.
The Russian won 15 career titles on the ATP World Tour, including the 2000 U.S. Open and the 2005 Australian Open. He ascended to world No. 1 a few months after winning his title in New York, and held the top ranking for a total of nine weeks in 2000 and 2001.
Safin said recently that he had thought long and hard about what to with his life after tennis.
"This is a completely new life, a new way of thinking, new way of doing things that's nothing to do with tennis or sports at all," Safin said. "But the two things definitely have one thing in common and that is that you need to have a character."
Safin will represent Prime Minister Vladimir Putin's United Russia Party in the new Duma, scheduled to convene on Dec. 21, but the Dec. 4 elections have been criticized both inside and outside of Russia, with widespread allegations of voter intimidation and vote rigging.
Safin's election drew praise from another former world No. 1: Pete Sampras, whom Safin defeated in the 2000 U.S. Open.
"Marat is very intelligent, articulate and well-spoken so I think it's great that he's getting involved in government in his homeland," Sampras said. " In 20 years Marat will be the President of Russia! Trust me, this guy is going to go a long way."
Official election results released Thursday by the Central Election Committee show that boxer Nikolai Valuev and three-time Olympic champion wrestler Alexander Karelin also won seats in the Duma, where they will also represent the Putin-led United Russia party.
